چکیده

On January 22-23, 1997, a workshop was held in Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD), and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Seattle, WA). The purpose of the workshop was to provide a forum for the discussion of the interplay between diet, genes, and cancer risk. This is just part of the burgeoning area in epidemiology that is studying gene-environment interaction more generally; however, it was felt by the organizers that a workshop on genes and diet was warranted, because there is considerable research activity in this area, and because it offered the opportunity to define new directions. It was not intended to review the field in detail, but rather to consider, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, the future possibilities. Participants were asked to: (a) address issues surrounding the incorporation of genetic markers into epidemiological studies ofdiet and disease and (b) identify strengths and weaknesses in current research and gaps in understanding and propose new research strategies, tools, and hypotheses.

Adherence to a Mediterranean diet, genetic susceptibility, and progression to advanced macular degeneration: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND Adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet is linked to a lower risk of mortality and chronic disease, but the association with the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and genetic susceptibility is unknown. OBJECTIVE We examined the association of adherence to the Mediterranean diet and genetic susceptibility with progression to advanced AMD. DESIGN Among 2525 subje...

Application of nutrigenomic concepts to Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The genetic makeup that individuals inherit from their ancestors is responsible for variation in responses to food and susceptibility to chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Common variations in gene sequences, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms, produce differences in complex traits such as height or weight potential, food metabolism, food-gene interactions, and disea...

Gene-Diet Interaction and Precision Nutrition in Obesity

The rapid rise of obesity during the past decades has coincided with a profound shift of our living environment, including unhealthy dietary patterns, a sedentary lifestyle, and physical inactivity. Genetic predisposition to obesity may have interacted with such an obesogenic environment in determining the obesity epidemic. Growing studies have found that changes in adiposity and metabolic resp...

Diet-Microbiota Interactions: A New Approach to Personalized Nutrition

Personalized nutrition is a new approach in medical sciences that is based on genetic profile, individual needs, and environmental conditions considering health status and chronic diseases of every person. Studies have shown that genetic differences cannot solely justify various responses to medications and diets, and other important factors including gut microbiota are also involved. Human bo...

Mediterranean diet and upper aerodigestive tract cancer: the Greek segment of the Alcohol-Related Cancers and Genetic Susceptibility in Europe study.

Several dietary factors have been associated with the occurrence of cancers of the oral cavity and oropharynx, larynx and oesophagus, collectively called upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancers, but the evidence is considered as inconclusive. We hypothesised that the traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern may be more strongly inversely associated with UADT cancer risk than individual dietar...

The investigation of the diversity of lactobacilli spp. and assessment their some probiotic properties in traditional dairy products in East Azerbaijan province in Iran

Nowadays, there is increasing interest in the production of functional foods, particularly probiotic foods. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) particularly strains of Lactobacillus are important bacteria in food microbiology and human nutrition due to their ability to fermented food production and have received considerable attention as probiotics. The traditional fermented dairy foods as a rich source...
